That depends on where you live, how big the tree is, and whether it’s on private or public land. Campbell River, Courtenay, and Comox each city has their own rules about tree removal, especially when it comes to protecting the environment.
In Campbell River, you may need a permit if the tree is in a protected area, like near a stream, on a steep slope, or in a zone with special environmental rules. These are called “development permit areas,” and the city uses them to help protect the land and water.
In Courtenay, you may need a permit if the tree is located near a creek or river, or is part of a larger development plan. Protected trees—such as those that are exceptionally large or part of a natural area—may also require special approval before they can be removed.
In Comox, you usually don’t need a permit to remove a tree from your yard, unless it’s part of a new building project or in a sensitive environmental area. Trees on public property, like sidewalks or boulevards, can’t be removed without the town’s permission.
